Psilocybin Therapy Guide

Preparation, Experience and Integration

Nutritional Recommendations and Supplements

General Dietary Guidelines

Weeks Before the Session

In the weeks leading up to the session, it's important to follow a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and get adequate sleep. This will help put your body and mind in the best possible state for the experience.

Focus on eating whole foods, limiting processed foods and foods high in salt, sugar, oils, and animal fats.

Fill your plate with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits (preferably organic), beans and legumes, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and wild-caught fish.

48 Hours Before the Session

Refrain from consuming alcohol or recreational drugs for at least 48 hours before the session. These substances can interfere with the effects of psilocybin and may compromise the therapeutic process.

Avoid stimulants such as caffeine on the day of your session.

Eat light, easily digestible meals in the 24 hours preceding the session.

On the Day of the Session

Eat a light, nutritious meal 2-3 hours before the session. Avoid heavy, fatty meals that might cause discomfort during the experience.

Ensure you are well-hydrated, but avoid excessive drinking right before the session to prevent frequent bathroom visits during the experience.

Avoid cough medicines or other medications that contain stimulants on the day of your session.

Specific Foods to Avoid

Although psilocybin itself is not an MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) like some other psychedelics (e.g., ayahuasca), it's still advisable to avoid certain foods that might interfere with your experience or cause discomfort:

Tyramine-rich Foods

While not as strictly necessary as with ayahuasca, it may be prudent to limit foods high in tyramine content, such as:

  • Aged cheeses (cheddar, brie, camembert)
  • Fermented sausages (pepperoni, salami)
  • Smoked or processed meats (bacon, hot dogs, corned beef)
  • Fermented soy products (soy sauce, tempeh)
  • Sauerkraut and kimchi
  • Avocados (especially overripe)
  • Dried fruits
  • Draft beer and certain wines

Other Foods to Avoid

  • Heavy, fatty meals: These can cause digestive issues during the experience.
  • Heavily spiced food: Can cause stomach discomfort during the session.

Supplements

Potentially Supportive Supplements

While there is limited scientific research on specific supplements for psilocybin therapy, the following are sometimes mentioned as potentially supportive:

  • Magnesium: May help relax muscles and reduce tension.
  • B vitamins: Support the nervous system and may help metabolize neurotransmitters.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: Support brain health and may have anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Adaptogenic herbs: Herbs such as ashwagandha or rhodiola may help reduce stress and support the body during intensive experiences.

Supplements to Avoid

  • 5-HTP and Tryptophan: These can increase serotonin production and potentially lead to serotonin syndrome when combined with psilocybin.
  • St. John's Wort: This herb can affect serotonin levels and should be avoided.
  • Stimulating Supplements: Caffeine, guarana, and other stimulating supplements can exacerbate anxiety and disrupt the experience.

Medication Considerations

It's crucial to consult with your therapist and physician about any medications you're taking, especially:

  • SSRIs and SNRIs: Antidepressants can have interactions with psilocybin and may reduce the intensity of the experience.
  • MAO inhibitors: These can have serious interactions with psilocybin and require special attention.
  • Benzodiazepines: These can reduce or block the effects of psilocybin.

Never change your medication without consulting your doctor, even for a psilocybin session.
